Almost every yard has a hedge that needs to periodically be trimmed, and a hedge trimmer can offer a fast means to do this. There are two different types, an electric trimmer and a manual one. The electric model not only is faster than its manual counterpart, but also offers significantly more cutting precision.
There a few safety precautions to take before being able to safely use a hedge trimmer. First, take the time to read through the user's manual. Before plugging anything in, ensure that all equipment is in proper working order. This entails checking to make sure there are no loose screws, bolts, or any other broken parts. As long as it has been maintained after every use, everything should be fine. It is also extremely important that the work area is cleared of all other people and pets. And finally, after donning the appropriate safety gear, make sure that there is nothing hidden in the hedge. This may take the form of wiring or just miscellaneous trash.
To start with, take and plug in the cord to an outlet. This will most likely require the use of an extension cord unless the hedges are literally right outside the front door. Ensure that there is plenty of slack so that the movement of the trimmer is not restricted in any way. If the cord snags and ends up pulling during the actual trimming, chances are the hedge isn't going to come out looking as expected! A simple way to make sure there is adequate cord for movement is to take and swing the trimmer in both up, down, and side-to-side motions. When actually trimming, make sure the cord doesn't get in the way. Generally, it is best to start cutting and work upward.
Here are a few additional tips for using a trimmer properly to keep in mind while working. When doing any kind of yard work, the best clothing to wear is long pants, a shirt with long sleeves, gloves, some sort of eye shield, and preferably ear protection. Take care not to lift the trimmer above chest height- if the shrubbery is too tall to easily reach, use a step ladder to get to it. This will prevent any serious injury due to falling or potentially dropping running machinery. And finally, plan out the cuts before making them otherwise the job will take much longer than it should.
